“MAY” EP: I know it took a minute, but this one is definitely worth it.
When you meet people you click with instantly on a whim, you are more enticed to incorporate that person into your life nearly instantly. It sounds like high praise, but Billy Libby (friend, incredible solo artist in his own right and founder/heart behind Your Song, Your Story ) is absolutely the first person I’ve met in New York City that I’ve had that odd connection with. I met him this February for coffee to talk about him filling in for my friend Saul on guitar for a show I was supposed to have in London. I think we talked for almost four hours about everything from cults to books to our own experiences and struggles in music. He gave me a copy of his home produced EP and I was totally floored by how awesome it sounded. I called him the next day and hired him for the London gig.
We started practicing for the show but it never happened. The venue cancelled it, but we kept practicing together. Billy arranged guitar parts to nearly all of the songs I perform live at that point, except now we had no show, no outlet, no need for the work we’d put in. But I didn’t want all of those arrangements to go to waste.
It wasn’t until I showed Billy a song I’d written recently called “Anthem” that I thought to ask him to work with me on the monthly EP project. I played him the song, certain that it was probably garbage, and he just understood what I wanted to do. It’s really rare for me to meet someone who is coming from the same or a similar place sonically, and even more rare for me to meet someone who can help me articulate what it is I want to hear. I consider myself very lucky to have met someone who is and can be both. Billy did an incredible job on this EP.
A million thanks to Saul Simon MacWilliams The Lovely Light for mixing and mastering, Seth Faulk for playing drums, Tony Macelli for playing bass, and any other mystery musicians I don’t know about but know exist for lending their talents to these two songs.
